The word in classic Greek referred to them as servant. In the New Testament, the word was used to describe the office of those who cared for the poor in the church and who distributed to them the money collected on their behalf. The deacons of the church were the servants of the Pastor and the church. They were chosen for assignment - to help, to save, to care for the temporal necessities of the people.
